Preparing Wild Sheep Horns

Tip by Bob Ulshafer of Sundance Taxidermy in Boise, Idaho

  • sheephorns
  • While your wild sheep horns are still on the skull, place them on a rack or on the floor in a dry area for 1 to 2 months, until completely dry.
  • To remove the horns from the skull, lay a 3/4″ piece of plywood on the concrete floor and beat the front of the horns at the base to pop them off the skull. Whack them good and hard! Use heavy gloves during this process.
  • Wash and clean out the horn sheaths thoroughly.
  • Wax them with Johnson’s Paste Wax and buff when dry.
  • NEVER use any type of oil on your wild sheep horns. The horns will absorb the oil and turn black!
  • Boil the skull and core in Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda.
  • Now your wild sheep horns are ready to mount!
  • For truly beautiful horns, apply Antler & Horn Conditioner (Stk. # S-209) from Research Mannikins. The unique properties of this product clean, condition, and enhance the visual color while leaving a natural feel to the surface of the horns.
